The people and space behind the sound
Established in 1998 in Auckland’s Arch Hill / Grey Lynn area, Arch Hill Studios was also home to the beginnings of the Arch Hill Recordings label. While the label moved on in 2004, the studio continued and is now independently run by John McDermott.
The space has gradually evolved into a rehearsal and recording hub. With an acoustically treated live room and a mix of equipment available, it supports both practice sessions and recording work across a range of projects.
Today the studio continues to serve musicians across Auckland, offering a dependable space to collaborate, experiment, and move projects forward. It’s a continuation of the building’s long connection to local music-making.
John McDermott is the owner and operator of Arch Hill Studios, bringing over 30 years of experience as a musician and qualified audio engineer. He’s passionate about helping artists capture their sound in a relaxed, down-to-earth environment.
From recording and mixing to drum tuition and rehearsal guidance, John combines technical skill with a practical, no-nonsense approach, making the studio a welcoming space for musicians of all levels.
